The Museum is housed in the former House of Maritime Commitment, an architectural landmark of great importance to the city, dating from the late 18th century.
The Museum was inaugurated in 2001. It took the designation of Municipal Museum of Olhão in 2014. It assumes itself as a mediator of the Olhanense Culture, preserving, interpreting, promoting and disseminating the patrimonial testimonies of the county.
The collection is extensive and diversified, comprising such collections as: maritime heritage, archeology, numismatics, canning industry, plastic and decorative arts, photography, metrology, cinema, “agromarítimas fainas”, naval models, weapons, freemasonry and pharmacy.
• Maritime Commitments in the Algarve
The exhibition Maritime Commitments in the Algarve takes the visitor on a journey through the history of the associations of marinates in the Algarve, also known by Brotherhoods or Confraternities of the Holy Body.
• Roman Presence in the Municipality of Olhão
This exhibition shows the most representative heritage of the Latin presence in the territory of Olhão, embodied into everyday objects, fishing, commerce, architecture and death.
